Sd Kfz 234/2 Puma panzerspah platoon I completed

These guys took forever to finish :) Plus being away for the past 4 days on holidays didn't help the situation much. The vehicle in the center is the company command vehicle which i showed in the last post. I won't be showing individual vehicle pics coz if you've seen one puma then you've seen them all. I'm maxing out on pumas for this list so in the end i'll be having 13 recon vehicles with ROF 2 and anti-tank 9. This should scare the living daylights out of any soviet tank commanders come May when the Bagration campaign starts :)

The second platoon will also have 6 vehicles but a three color scheme which i'll post up soon. Not sure why the pic is kinda grainy. Also i think i over-did on some of the exhaust smoke residue on certain vehicles. Another thing i need to post in the future....a review of MIG flames of war pigments. They're just too good and easy to use :)

As you can see, i got carried away with puma 11. Another six to go then i need to start building the another platoon that i'm dying to start on. Plus i have a project to start this month with Jeff.......sighhhh where did the time fly.....

So many projects and so little time....

Panzerspahkompanie

I've started building my Panzerspahkompanie for the Firestorm Bagration campaign that Legio will be organizing in May. This will be a 1500 points list taken from the Grey Wolf book.

If you're into Flames of War then this book is a must buy. Battlefront took out all of the German army elements from their previous smaller books (Stalin's Onslaught, Hammer & Sickle, River of Heroes, Stalin's Europe and Fortress Europe) and compiled it into a very nice hardcover edition. 265 gorgeous colored pages of all German forces which took part in the eastern front. Novel idea if u ask me :)

I'm building an Aufklarungs company. Sounds cool doesn't it :) It means reconnaissance in German but aufklarung sounds more exotic. My list is taken from page 90 and will be filled with mostly recon elements supported by some artillery units from division.

This Puma armored car will be the command HQ vehicle for this list. I have 2 full platoons of these vehicles so that's what i'll be working on for the time being.

Lizardmen ready to invade Gameforge, Penang

My lizardmen border patrol is all done!!!
Fuuuhhhhhhhhhh.......long sighhhhhhhhhhh.....

These 16 saurus will be the main force in this list accompanying the scar veteran. Not sure if i can place the hero and champion on the sides....they're there because the models wouldn't fit nicely in the middle.

Now all i have to do is take them for a few spin and re-learn the fantasy rules :)
Perhaps this hobby night. Anyone up for it??

Took more time on these guys than i was supposed too but they are the command squad and will be upfront together with the scar vet. So hopefully the extra effort will be worth it when judging for painting is done :)

I didn't get a before pic of the champion so i'll just show it after touch up.

I do however have before pics of the standard bearer and musician. I can't believe i was satisfied with how they looked when i finished them way back in 2010. Like i said previously, the interest to paint them plummeted and i just wanted them done. More like half done...

Now all i have left to paint for this border patrol force are 16 saureses.

Unfortunately for me....... this little nugget crawled out of the woodwork hehe.

This will be the Company HQ for my Panzerspahkompanie 1500 points list in preparation for the Bagration campaign in May. Let's see next post whether i continue completing the touch up of the lizardmen or make a slight detour and indulge myself :)

Spicing up the Lizardmen

I must admit that the paintjob on my lizardmen army was rushed. I just grew tired of the project and wanted it to be tabletop worthy for a game with Faizal.

As u can see from the proof below.

The lack of effort is so obvious. We definitely can't have these models represent the Wildhost for the upcoming event. Good excuse to do some much needed touch up plus at 500 points there won't be too many models that i need to work on.

So for the next few days i'll do some re-work to raise the standard of the Lizardmen patrol. Gameforge has even mentioned a best painted patrol :) Who knows....

Not masterpieces but acceptable i think :)

At 75 points for a fire spouting breath template damage small dragon, i wish i had the points to take 2 of these. Unfortunately not.

Gameforge 500 points Border Patrol Tourney

Not content with terrorizing just the Klang valley area, the Wildhost will be rampaging and maiming and slaughtering their way to Penang next month to enter this tournament :)

Led by the legendary 7th spawn of the 7th spawn saurus scar-veteran Grim-locke the Grim, the lizardmen of the Wildhost will try their damnest not to be maimed and/or slaughtered hehe!!

It's been a while since i took part in a tournament or played fantasy....actually this will be my first fantasy tournament entered..ouch....

But it will be a good trip. Together with my partners in pillage, Jeff Deathkorps and Iqbal wood warden ( i wish both of them good luck getting their patrol painted...not :), Penang islanders will rue the day that Gameforge and Doc Selvam opened their peaceful and beautiful island to the savage Lizardmen, Beastmen ....and ahhh wood loving tree hugging elves.

Hobby room clean up

I did a clean up of my hobby room and added a few new features(actually just 2) as a reward for myself for completing the angels sanguine and US paratroopers army last year :)

Feature number one is the the Ikea tabletop extension. It cost me $149 and is totally worth it!! It has a magnetic whiteboard, shelves for hobby stuff and space for books on top. Which i think is the coolest feature. Now i can proudly display my collection of space marine battles novels.

Second new feature is the Ikea table cabinet which cost me a whooping $280. But again i'm happy with this investment. For one, my vallejo game color set fits snugly into the drawers. And number two, i can now have a space to put all my paints, washes, pigments and most other chemicals in one place. I forgot to take a picture before clean up but it was not much difference from this pic which was taken in early 2010.

So new look room and a new year with so many deliciously tantalizing projects to look forward too :)
One of which i've already started and is on my table in the first picture above hehe.

Here's wishing all your projects for this new year gets completed on scheduled.

Airborne recon platoon completed

Yes, these guys are finally done!!! And with them done, i've completely painted all the american paratroopers models i have in my possession. Mission complete.

I now have a 1250 late war Parachute Rifle Company; 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles. Currahee!!!I purposely left one jeep without the forward engine armor plating to indicate the platoon commander. Looks sleeker and nicer i think.

These jeeps were a dream to paint. They're really nice models. I'll try them out this friday nite during our market garden campaign.C'mon...who wouldn't want to be firing a .50 cal machine gun mounted on a jeep!!
DUHH!! DUHH!! DUUHHH!!! DUHH!! DUHH!! DUUHHH!!!

I would love to increase the force to a 1500 or 1750 strength but it'll have to wait. My mission of painting a 1k has been exceeded, i've painted all the models that i have so its time to move to a new project.

Airborne recon platoon

These guys will fill in my 1500 all US parachute company. It's been nice painting up some vehicles for a change. I'd say they're around 80% complete.

Just need to paint up the gunners, apply decals, some washing and weathering and hopefully they'll be ready for war come this friday night :)

US paratroopers anti tank platoon completed

The final element of my 1K US paratroopers force is finally done :)

I'm glad i painted these last because they are really nice models. Nice silhouette esp from the side. You gotta some really big balls sitting behind those guns waiting for tanks to appear esp if u see and hear a big tiger rumbling close by.

Well, they're not fearless veterans for nothing huh.

Not one to rest at the moment so my next project is the paras recon platoon consisting of 8 armored jeeps equipped with .50 cal machine guns.

This is to complete my 1.5K list and will not feature in the market garden campaign....well perhaps they could. Lets see how fast i can get them done.

Silver Skulls test model

Minor distraction last weekend. This model was done last Sunday.

It's another test model for a project next year. Lesser known space marine chapter. It would certainly be a more affordable and doable project than the pre-heresy Emperor's Children, which i will do one day :)

My initial choice was the doom eagles but finally settled on silver skulls. Ditto on doom eagles coz their chapter specialty is assault marines....and after my descent of angels list, i'm in no mood to paint more jump pack marines.

The silver skulls have a darker metallic tone compared to doom eagles and after reading up on them i was hooked. An ultramarine 2nd founding successor chapter who believe deeply in signs and portents.

As you can see, i'm experimenting with weathering for this project. Although i don't want to over do it.

I still need to work on making my chips look more realistic. And i'll be getting the gw silver skulls shoulder pads so please forgive the crude freehand rendition.

In the past i would've been pleased with this result but a change is needed.
I have to learn new tricks :)

And in case you're wondering, no i haven't forgotten my airborne troops. The guns for the anti-tank platoon is all done :) 15 more infantry models and my 1K parachute infantry list is all done!!!

US paratroopers Machine Gun platoon completed

These were actually completed yesterday morning but i wanted to share the matt varnish tip first :)

Apologies for the dark pic.

And continuing my color coding system, this platoon got light green dots.

This platoon will be divided into 2 and attached to 1st and 2nd infantry platoon. They'll be providing covering fire while the brave fearless vets mount their assaults. Also useful for providing defensive fire in case the platoons are assaulted. No bazooka teams because i didn't have the points. For my 1.5k list i will definitely have 2 bazooka teams for added anti-tank threats.

I just have to paint my anti-tank platoon to finish this 1K list and they'll be ready to take part in operation market garden :)
I'll start on that tomorrow.

In the meantime, yesterday afternoon and the most part of sunday will be occupied with a test model for a project scheduled for next year.

Of course when i say test model you know it won't be FoW models hehe.

Matt varnish

I was having trouble with matt varnishes going all dusty white a while back. I tried using gw and vallejo varnishes and both gave me the same results. After airbrushing the varnish on, white dusty specks would appear after the varnish dried up. Maybe its because i used an airbrush to spray it on. It can't be the product because i bought both quite recently.

Anyway, my good friend Jeff suggested another product. Share and share alike :)

These are the 2 products.

1. Daler-Rowney soluble varnish matt
I got this at Arts Friend at Gardens for around RM25-30. Sorry guys, i forgot the actual price.
It is an acrylic resin based varnish. The liquid is quite thick and needs to be diluted for our use.

That's why we need product no.2

2. Ace Hardware mineral spirits odorless paint thinner.
Again i apologise for not remembering the actual price but it shouldn't be more that RM30.
You should be able to get this at any Ace Hardware store. I got mine at Midvalley.
We'll use this to thin the varnish down. Its odorless so it won't stink up your hobby area. But do work in a well aired area for safety reasons :)

Because the varnish is quite thick, you don't need to use a lot. I use a ratio of 1:3 varnish:thinner and it's worked beautifully for me.

The color after diluting. Its ready for airbrushing now. I've always used an airbrush to varnish my models.

But for the sake of my friends, i tried using a brush to see if it would produce the same results.

After varnishing. The one on the left and in front was done using a brush and the other using an airbrush. As you can see, they produced similar results. Fuhhhh :)
I can't quite show the level of mattness (is this even a word?) in this picture but I am very happy with the results. I would swear by them :)
Next time, i'll buy the gloss or semi-gloss and see how it works.

2 lessons from this methinks.

1. Share and share alike. If you're having a problem just tell your friends, they could hook you up with a solution.

2. Go outside the standard hobby range of products. You never know what gems you can uncover. This varnish should last me for avery long time. Not bad for a RM50 investment :)

Machine gun platoon update

Started work on the machine gun platoon last Sunday. They would've been done except that i think just 2 models on the normal base leaves it looking rather empty.

There isn't much reference on the net that i've managed to find and even the FoW site has just one clear pic. So i decided to paint an extra figure for all the teams.

Should get these guys done by this Saturday.

1 week for 1 platoon...just going with the flow :)

Easy Company 2nd platoon completed

Completed 2nd platoon today. Changed my style of painting from single bases to doing the whole platoon at one go. Through trial and error, i believe i've got down my process and painting these models are becoming a bit quicker. Which is good because i still have a lot to paint to finish this army :)
I've continued with using different colors to differentiate each platoons. 2nd got blue.
And this is what i've managed to paint so far. Co HQ with 3 bazooka teams, 1st platoon, 2nd platoon and field artillery battery. Not bad huh :)
And all of them fits snugly into these trays which i will share in the next post. I'm sure you guys can guess where it comes from. Suffice to say, they're AWESOME!!! Must buy for FoW players/hobbyists.
Next up is the machine gun platoon.

Parachute Field Artillery Battery Completed

Completed the command, staff and observer teams. Now this platoon is done and ready to lay down some hurt to support the infantry platoon before their assaults.

I'm really enjoying painting these guys :) And to keep with my color recognition system, i painted dark purple dots to mark them. It's not too visible from the picture but they're there.

Up next is 2nd platoon. But a neat project just got whispered to me during work and it's sounding really interesting hehe. Let's how fickle i am....

Must paint 2nd platoon....must paint second platoon....don't look at those marines.....don't...paint 2nd platoon....huh!!! where did that come from..... ;)

Easy Company 1st platoon ready for war

Finally got these guys done :) I'll admit that when i started this project i thought it would be easy and quick. Quite the opposite...

What you see here is the basic strength of a US para platoon. 1 platoon command, 1 bazooka team, 1 mortar team and 6 infantry teams. 32 small soldiers in total. Of course they're not as big or detailed as your average marine figure but those figure do stack up....

I had this idea of painting lines at the back of the bases to differentiate between platoons and independent teams but settled on using dots as these are easier to paint. So red is my Company HQ, yellow for 2iC and khaki are 1st platoon. Maybe blue for 2nd. This way when my troops are on the table i can easily identify where each platoon is and give necessary orders to destroy the enemy :)

I'm tired of painting infantry teams for time being so went with these guys. Am sure you can guess what will go in the middle...

101st progress

Completed the 1st platoon HQ and 1st squad. Progress has been slow this week but progress is still progress they say :)

So this is what i've done so far.

Company HQ consisting of Co commander and 2ic supported by 3 bazooka teams. 1st platoon ; platoon command and 2 rifle/mg team= 1 squad. I painted an extra command team which will be 2nd platoon's.

The followings pics are esp for 4eyedmonster, a fellow hobbyist and blogger i met for the first time over the weekend :)

I use a small computer fan to dry paints faster when i need to. It uses a usb connecter and i plug it in to my laptop.

I like to paint my Fow individually bluetacked on whatever i can find as opposed to using the icecream stick method. Although i still do batch production painting in small squads. The good thing about batch painting is you feel a sense of achievement seeing the models completed. Squad by squad until its all done :)

And this is my ultra sophisticated photo studio hehe. A3 size paper and Ikea table lamp.

Yesterday's hobby nite was truly FUN!!!

That was the best campaign experience ever in my life :)

Was in painting limbo until last Friday night. Started after I had completed painting my 2k points angels sanguine for the Ghemehaal campaign in September. Took a break for a while. Then had this over-whelming desire to paint but just didn't know what to paint. Worse was i couldn't find inspiration to paint anything.

Painted a test model emperor's children. Project for next year.

Painted the ancient stegadon. Lost interest.

Painted a DIY marine chapter. Lost interest.

Bought a dark eldar reaver and just completed one rider. Started on his bike but lost interest.

That was until Yip showed up at hobby night with his FOW US paratroopers company box set :)

Saturday morning, ransacked my hobby room to find these guys. In a forgotten box, in a very dark corner.

These are my US para models done in 2007. Wow...that's nearly 4 years ago....

They were my very first FOW infantry unit and i was new to the hobby :) Ugly bases huh...

Well, its Oct 2011 now. I've been in the hobby for some time now. A little bit wiser and learnt some skills along the way.

Had some spare models and ...

I give you Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles. This is the test model for the command squad led by none other than the legendary Lt Spears.

Yip - check out those unit patches on the left shoulders hehe.

Had so much fun painting these models!! Now i need to do a major de-base and paint removal project and start getting the 1st platoon done. Thanks again Yip. Hope this encourages you to paint up your paras :)

Let's set the military exercise date for end December...let's make it 6th January Hobby night :)

We completed week 2 of the campaign last friday night and let me just say that it was a most awesome hobby night!!!

I won't go into much details because there's a much better way of doing it ;)

You guys will not want to miss the next installment!!! Jeff has really raised the bar for this campaign and i'm glad to be sharing in the experience.

Speaking of experience, hobby night was again another blast. Beside continuing with the campaign we also had a visitor from Singapore, Nicholas. He's planning some really cool stuff for the hobby scene there and we look forward to supporting and taking part in your events :)

My 3rd generation bases

After completing two 40k army, I'm ready to start a new one....actually am dying to start painting something. Since this will be my 3rd army, naturally I'll want it to be better painted than the pervious ones. I haven't decided on which army to start yet although i did buy a box of reavers...they're just too cool!! I'm waiting to see the necron codex and models line up before deciding.

But it will be between dark eldar and necrons....depending on which will be the cheesiest.

One thing I do want to improve on is my bases.

I present to you exhibit A circa 2009, Base Mk1

Being my very first army i went with the basics. Sand, small rocks and statci grass. Basic, simple but time consuming in my opinion. Looking back...not bad for a first try.

Exhibit B Circa 2010, Base Mk 2.

I wanted to create a forgeworld effect with the most minimal effort = lazy. Yes, i admit I was lazy and then and wanted something easy and quick. having little inspiration at that time i was satisfied with it. Should have done more.

Exhibit C circa now, Base Mk3.

I still want a simple to produce base but something nicer. So combining what i learnt from my previous attempts and using materials still available to me, this is what i came up with. Going for the ruined city look. What do you think?

Now i need to decide on which army to collect and start painting again :)

In the meantime, this is what i'm working on. Though i'm finding very hard to find inspiration to paint it. Painting without a purpose seems soulless.

Great start to the Ghemehaal campaign last night!!

The night rightly started with campaign briefing by forgemaster Jeff who was also the campaign moderator seeing as the chaos were confident with just having Iqbal and Subhan defending the planet.
We used the flames of war Firestorm campaign setting which has been modified to 40k universe setting. Next campaign night, the official Gehemehaal map should be ready and i'll update on that.

Another thing i need to get for myself is a photo enhancing software so i can make some funny captions on the photos :) For example....

"Comanders...should you gain initiative, you can instruct your forces to attack any region on the map but DO NOT.. i strongly repeat under any circumstances DO NOT attack the Burger King outlet located here!!! I needs my super size whooper!!!

Jokes aside, it was nice going over the briefing process and placing all the assets available on the map. One thing evident from this was that chaos has significantly more assets available to them :(
Which suits the campaign narrative perfectly seeing as this will be the final push by the imperial on this chaos controlled planet.

After rolls were made, Week 1 action saw :

Subhan's demons vs Dann's golden angels
Iqbal's renegade inquisitor vs my glorious and honorable angels sanguine
Redeye's ...forces vs Arzmi's grey knights
(since we were short on chaos campaigners and Red came to hobby night, why not let everyone in on the fun times :)!!! good on you red ;)

Game 1: Subhan vs Dann ; Killpoint
I didn't actually manage to get the full details of their game ....bad on me :( .... but i heard (this has to be confirmed) that Subhan managed to almost totally wipe out Dann's angels. Almost or totally is the part that needs confirmation by them. Needless to say, first blood went to the chaos forces.

Game 2 : Iqbal vs me; capture and control
I was really lucky we rolled for this mission and managed to go second. Iqbal had 2 assets (a defiler and orbital strike) which put me at the back foot from the start.
Getting to go second was really vital. I made full use of it by putting all my forces in reserve which basically denied Iqbal 2 rounds of shooting. This is another topic i'd like to discuss sometime in the future. What do u guys think of playing against an opponent who chooses to go second and reserving all his units?
My raven came in bottom of two, moved in 12'...used 4 missiles to down one enemy raven and stunned the other.
The angels were truly insipred last nite when deepstriking with all units making perfect landings with not even one scatter outcome.
And so Lord Sentikan and honor guards landed and melted a salamander full of renegade inquisition henchmen and assassins and paladins and whatever else that could fit in.
The van vets then assaulted them when their vehicle blew up. Perfection in execution :)

In all fairness i must admit that my hit and penetration rolls were immaculately good last nite and my opponent a bit the reserve. So with even numerical advantage the honorable angels managed to pull a win by end of turn 5.
And true to storyline, the last squad made a millimeter perfect landing on our objective on end of 5, moved in and captured it. The honor guards didn't managed to kill the last servitor guarding theirs but still contested it.

Game 3 : Red vs Arzmi; killpoint
Unfortunately no pics were taken of this game...again my fault. In defense i was busy ensuring the angels were coordinated and in control of the bigger picture :)
Arzmi won this.

So recap of Week 1 Ghemehaal:Annihilation >>> Imperials 2 - Chaos 1.

It was a really fun nite which ended around 11.30.

The best part was that we played to a storyline. Seeing all those assets available to the chaos forces and being outnumbered from the get go really got the strategic part of the brain thinking in over-drive.
I'm sure as the weeks goes by and the campaigners/we get to learn the system we'll be able to make better calls but in the meantime.....

IT WAS AWESOME FUN ROLLING DICES WITH GOOD FRIENDS!!!

DIY chapter

Tried my hands at creating a DIY chapter over the weekend. Wanted to paint something but didn't know what to actually paint. That was until Jeff suggested making a DIY marines chapter. Cool idea. And this is what i came up with.

It wasn't until i completed the test model that i realised that my color scheme is similar to my saim-hann and angels sanguine....
That was definitely not intended. I was actually going for a red that had a bit of a blue hue..
Guess i should throw out black and red from my palette :)Not that i'm unhappy with the result, it does look quite nice imo but too similar in color scheme to my previous 40k armies.

Also, i've not decided on a chapter name. Red canaries....scarlet avenger, hunters eternal, eternal hunters, death lords, exemplars...

Back to the army painter...

I must admit that i truly enjoyed getting this test model all painted up :)
I was never a fan of brightly colored marines but the purple/pink scheme really looks nice when you factor in the legion's background.
Many thanks to Aaron Dembski for writting The First Heretic, THE book that got me hooked to the pre-heresy storyline. Thus starting this project. It wasn't about the EC but it did fuel my hunger to know about pre-heresy lore.

Company number on the left leg. I also decked him with the standard tools of trade. Is it too much? Does it look crowded?

I decided to go with grey rubble scheme for the basing. Added a spent clip to give it some feature and a meltabomb for good measure. That is a meltabomb rite??

The fickle mind

What do you do after finally completing a project and have nothing planned yet for the next?
I guess you look back at all the ideas you had or discussed with friends and try to decide which one excited you the most.

In my case, it was starting my skaven army. And so i started building queek headtaker. I didn't like the huge trophy rack on his back so i cut it off. He looks slicker this way....to me at least :)

But my weakness is having a very short span of attention. My brother Arzmi(when will he finally start posting) got me all riled up about trying the new fantasy magic expansion book so queek went back into the cabinet and the ancient stegadon got a priming and some colors drybrushed.

Now did i mention i had a short span of attention...aah yes i did. And so the stegadon got pushed to the corner for a while to let this guy get painted up :)

I present to you my test model of the emperor's children. This is in preparation for a 30K build that we're planning on doing early next year.
I wanted to try and get the purple/pink color right for the build so please tell me how it looks.

I plan on doing a dark grey rubble base. That will be done over the weekend. Then back to the stegadon, queek..then the ...aaa i forgot again.

Those who you who know my brother and me very well, will know that the both of us enjoy a very very good laugh :) We're the clowns in our gaming community and always see the lighter side of things. Gaming isn't something serius for us but having good fun is.

And so the following is a very fictional tale inspired during one of our light hearted drinks. Please read it with a bag of salt and a bag sugar and some weed for good measure. Most importantly i hope it makes you smile :)

After finally completing my angels sanguine army i reckon i deserve to fool around a bit. Beware this will be a very very long post!!! )

Know Yourself and know Yourself some more then you will win all battles - unnamed master strategist, 40th millennium.

I had just completed my Angels Sanguine army and was contemplating who i should play with first. Naturally, i wanted to win the first game. Don't we all when fielding our new army for the first time? So i made a mental list of all the players in our gaming community that i would inevitably play against using this new army. For ease of typing, i will from now abbreviate my Angels Sanguine 1750 list as 'ASS'.

As much as i wanted to win the first game using my ASS i didn't want to go up against an unworthy opponent. I wanted someone who will test my strategic capabilities to the fullest but not so much that there was a possibility of me actually losing the game...A loss or a draw would not be a good start for my ASS.

After contemplating the tactical prowess of all the players, i decided that the most worthy opponent would be the Lord Inquisitor Arzmi with his uber melted cheese topped with grated cheese grey knights list. I had never lost to this list using my saim-hann warhost so it was the most logical option.

As i was devising my battle plans against him late in bed one night...a thought struck me...Eureka!!!
Who is my worst enemy??

Who could make costly mistakes that would eventually make me win or lose a game??

ME!!! I am my own worst enemy!!!

If i could not beat myself at 40k then what chance would i have of beating others???

Why didn't i think of this before.....borderline genius huh :)

Inspired i woke up from bed. The clock was 3.30am. I kissed my better half and told her i will be going downstairs to playtest my ASS against my saim-hann warhost. Used to my eccentricities, she wished me luck.

I got my armies and headed downstairs. I set up the table with randomly placed terrain so i wouldn't have any unfair tactical advantage over myself.

Yes, this is my gaming table at home. I know, i'm a lucky basket (please remember that this is a fictional tale)

Putting on my game face, i got ready to lock horns with myself!!

I rolled for mission and myself rolled for deployment. I rolled annihilation and myself rolled pitched battle. Muahahahaha....myself had no chance. I am the master of trashing, the king of TA. You iz going down myself!!!

Myself made the mistake of deploying too near the center.

I managed to seize initiative and proceeded to show myself the true power of the dark side.

Storm raven Invigilus takes down a serpent and fire prism!!! Hail the glory of the machine spirit. Die you xenos scum!!!

Precision deep striking kills off all dire avengers from the serpent.

The Death Company led by Chaplain Lemarters and joined by brother Brutus, the bad ass dreadnought, deploys from the raven and assaults the legendary jetbike seer council squad trying to run away. All xenos dies a horrible death and their spirit stones crushed.

After getting their serpent blown to bits, Eldard and his banshee harem are fired upon by squad odysseus then assaulted by vanguard vets squad Aquilon. None survived..

I don't want to bore you with details but suffice to say i managed to TA(Totally Annihilated) myself by end of Turn 2.

Lessons learned.

1. It was a real challenge playing against myself as every move i made was anticipated by myself!!! As much as i tried to trick/confuse myself with my tactics, myself was able to see right thought it and was not easily duped. Just how myself managed to do that confounds me. Myself really is a good player. I'll give myself that.

2. I do not believe in RAW or RAI. I believe in RAIBM. Rules As Interpreted By Me. I know the rules and how it should be played so don't go anyone be arguing with me about rules. The only reason i make posts in gaming forums is to get others to agree to my views. Most threads will end up in a very long and exhaustively winded argument about how the rules should be played, what's fair what's not, what's logical what's not ...but in the end they all agree with my interpretation.

Like i said, I don't want clarification as i already know how the rules should be played. I just want them to agree to my views. Period!

So imagine the difficulty i had playing against myself!!! After several heated arguments about rules interpretation which almost ended up in a fist fight against myself, we decided to roll for it. True enough, i won all the rolls. Take that myself!!! In your face!!!

3. I truly enjoyed playing against myself. Being ultra competitive and not willing to give any grounds, myself provided me with the best challenge yet. I must admit that this was the hardest game of 40k i've played in my entire life. So victory against myself was even sweeter :)

4. It was a super fun game with laughs all around. At the end i gave myself full marks for sportsmanship in the after-match results form. Myself was generous in defeat and gave me full sportsmanship and painting score. You're just too kind :)

If you haven't tried playing against yourself, i seriously recommend that you give it a try. It is crazy awesome!!!

We ended play at 4.30am and had a quiet discussion on the game over a hot cup of chocolate.

So my ASS record currently stands at 1-0-0 (W-L-D). Yes!!!!! FIST PUMP!!!!

I smiled with the knowledge that i have beaten my worse enemy and am ready to conquer the world.

Myself has even asked me for a re-match. I'm really looking forward to that :)

I've finally completed my space marine army at long last :) Its been a very fulfilling experience i must say and its nice to know that i'm done way ahead of schedule of the campaign that we're playing on running next month.

Angels Sanguine Death Company

These are my death company in progress. I have 10 brothers in my list and so far they've done very well in the games that i've playtested them with.

Together with chaplain Lemartes and dreadnought brother Brutus, they have opened me up to something i've not been used too playing my saim-hann army: crazy close combat effectiveness and survivability.

To give it a more angels sanguine theme, i used normal shoulder pads for the left side and gave them the sanguine chapter logo. Also this saves me more super cool death company shoulder pads for other marines :)

As you can see, there's still a lot to do. Not to mention that i've not yet figured out how to highlight the black armor plates. I do not want to spend time painting them on.

Your kind counsel/ideas for this are highly appreciated :).

Brother Brutus - Death Company dreadnought

This is my very first dreadnought build and i must say i love the model. I will definitely make room for more in my list. All the parts fitted very well. I can't remember any fittings issue that i ran into. I'll check again for 2nd dread.

This model isn't completed yet as i still have to weather it. Just felt tired and wanted to rest for a while and recover my hobby juices. Serves me right for trying to go up against that hobby maniac whose building that sweet kreig army...
In the meantime would like to share with you my progress.

Sentikan - Chapter master of the Angels Sanguine completed

This is my rendition of Sentikan. Nothing to shout about I know. I'm not very good with conversions, actually everyone knows i'm a lazy basket and would much prefer to use readily available models.

I'll be using dante's stats for him. Am not much of a fluff guy either so I won't be inventing or giving special new stats and rules for him like Eternal warrior, There can be only one(if sentikan is killed; roll d6. On 2+ he comes back with 1 wound), Fleet, Counter attack,master-crafted digital-weapon,WS8, BS8, W8, A8 etc etc.

Dante stats but not the model. Used parts from sang guard kit (thanks to my eternal bro Ivan whose down under. When will u come back. We miss u lots) and death company kit.

Funny how the pose turned out similar to dante's. This was definitely not on purpose but does help when i inform friends that he plays as dante.

This was the pose i wanted to copy. Aaah well, all's good in the end.
The good news is that i now only have 12 more models to complete my 2K list for the ghemehaal list!! WooooHoooooo!!!!

Will definitely complete it before Oct 7th with time to spare to test the list :)

Next up : death company dreadnought.

Btw.....what do u guys think of creating new stats for a special character? Would u play against someone who brought one? And how do you ensure the stats aren't broken??

Stormraven Invigilus WH01 completed

Finally completed my stormraven. I'll be honest, it wasn't smooth sailing. I ran into a gut-wrenching, hair-pulling, almost testing the aerodynamics of the bulky raven by throwing it out of my window trouble....

I've learned the hard way that even a thinned down citadel badab black wash will leave a white frosting effect when it dries. Crap!!! That's the last time i use that stuff as an overall wash again. Back to using normal inks for me in the future.

The main downside of the frosting is it didn't let the final airbrush of flat to cover the areas around the decals which i had brushed on future to let the decals adhere better. So if u look closely, you'll see a very evident color difference.

Luckily i was able to remain calm and knew for a fact that a turbo boosting plastic stormraven kit out the window would not have made my day better....

These are my special addition to my stormraven :)
AAABM Mars pattern MkIV missiles. Advanced Anti Anything Bloodstrike Missiles. When i first saw the kit i knew i had to use these babies and make the raven look more menacing. After looking through 6 big boxes of airplane kits i finally managed to find them. Would do u think?

My photo studio isn't big enough to get this view on full white background but nice silhouette i think. 4 badass AAABMs ready to wreck havoc on the enemies of mankind.

Storm update 2

The stormraven is almost done. Just need to apply some exhaust smoke weathering then a final coating of flat coat to seal it all in.

One heartbreaking lesson i discovered while washing the kit was that gw washes will leave a white crust effect even after thinning it down considerably. Have u guys experienced the same? The actual reason i had to stop working on the raven few days ago.
I'll go back to inks next time.

Am quite happy on how the lights turned out :) Didn't know i had it in me. That's the thing when u have an active community blogging. It inspires u to try new things. Unfortunately, my efforts to get a similar effect for the star and port navigation lights didn't do to well so just had them in plain colors.

Should get this done by tonite and will update u later.

Angels sanguine chaplain

Had to take a break from working on my stormraven. One because i wanted all the parts i'd applied washes to fully dry and second i was getting a bit bored/tired painting it up.

So i decided to paint up my chaplain. Of course he had to have a jump pack being from the original all infantry descent of angels list. He will also be featuring in the upcoming ghemehaal campaign. Haven't named him yet....maybe i'll use him as lemartes seeing as how i'd already converted the new lemartes model as one of my librarian.

Yeah, i know i copped out from painting his huge scroll but i figured that he needed more red to give him an angels sanguine flavor. I'm ok with the outcome since my target really is tabletop standard :)

Stormraven update

Managed to get some good progress done over the weekend on the stormraven. It's been a long time since i painted up something this big. So masking the whole model actually took some time. The question now is whether to go for tabletop quality or really go crazy on details...

The angels sanguine color scheme looks quite nice on such a big model. Am quite happy with my airbrushing although there were minor over sprays which had to be painted over. Overall, i'm very happy with the scheme.

And i'm also happy i took Azlan's advise and made the glass canopies smaller. I like how it looks and does make the raven appear bigger in proportion. Time to get serius and get this baby all painted up :)

Chapter master Sentikan & stormraven progress

Spent most of the week assembling the gunship and thinking of ideas for the chapter master.

Chapter master first. I finally decided to use the head with the laurel. Again i used vallejo paints and i love the hue and easiness with which to thin and airbrush with. Am thinking of painting the his helmet and jump pack in gold to make him stand out among my other sanguine jp models.

I'm happy with the pose and think that it'll make a fine chapter master model once done.

The gunship was straight forward assembly. But i made a little modification to the pilot and gunner canopy as suggested by fellow Legio Malaysia officer Azlan. Basically to cover some portion of the canopy and put rivets to make it look smaller hence giving it a more realistic size comparison.

For the love of me i couldn't find any leftover styrene sheets so i used some thick plastic book covers :P Too lazy to go out and get some...

I used superglue hence the forsting but that'll be hidden once primed.

Final coat of red tomorrow then mask and spray the black area. Target to complete....this sunday.

I was invited to the forgemaster's lair today for some food, fun, fluff and talks.

And what a great time i had :)!!!

We kicked off with some hard assed space marine kill team action. I have not played a video game in ages so getting the chance to play a blood angels librarian was SWEET!!!!. Don't even get me started on Jeff's techmarine meltagun...the sound effect for that gun is simply awesome!!

This is how most of the game went...

I am definitely getting an xbox soon so i can get this game and get ready for the september release of the space marine game....drooollllll...
Play online as an angels sanguine assault marine...ohhh crap, i've models to paint for the ghemehaal campaign :(

After clearing the hulk of orks infestation, the forgemaster fired up his grill and cooked burgers for us. I can't describe how good a freshly cooked grilled burger tastes like. It is crazy delicious!! Get yourself invited then you'll know.

Our bellies full, we headed upstairs for some wholesome hobby talk. I am so envious of what this guy has set up for his hobby room. It is like hobby heaven in there :)
Jeff even managed to design the ultra cool new banner for my blog.

Lots of hobby stuff talk. Things we want to do for the campaign, things we wanted to do for ourselves, things we wanted to do for Legio Malaysia. It was real fun. And i learned a lot.

Squad Odyssues & Orpheus

As scheduled squad Odysseus and Orpheus are done. Can't believe i've finally finished my first troop squads :) Painting marines are fun!!!

Especially when its for a campaign project. These 2 squads will be accompanying Lord Sentikan, Chapter Master of the Angels Sanguine in the final battle for Ghemehaal this coming October. Yes, you heard it right guys....the Chapter Master himself has been tasked by the High Lords of Terra to take overall command of the imperial forces converging on Ghemehaal at this very moment.

Thanks to Jeff for the super cool suggestion :). And thanks for putting another project to my sanguine list....as if i don't have enough already. I'll be using dante as the base for his stats but will make a special Sentikan model. You can be sure he won't be in all gold.

In the meantime, i have already painted 34 jump pack equipped angels sanguine....not bad huh :)

Unfortunately, due to the list changes that had to be made for the Ghemehaal campaign fluff, i still have a lot to do. But i'm a man with a plan ;)

And the plan was to paint up this baby ....

But because Chapter Master Sentikan will now be leading the force, the baal will not be featuring in the list.

Sometimes i think the forgemaster is discreetly trying to sabotage my progress. Case of point....tomorrow should be a full solid day of hobbying for me but instead i've been called to assist the salamanders chapter to clear a drifting hulk of orks infestation :)

Wooooohooooooooo!!!!! Am so looking forward to that!!!

Applying decals

Not much too update. Just managed to get decals applied on my marines.

As most of u have experienced, gw decals are not the friendliest to work with. Having come from the aircraft modelling hobby, gw's decals leave much to be desired. Their thickness makes applying them on rounded surfaces quite hard.

But i do love those assault marines arrows so here's how i got mine done.

1. Make sure the surface is clean of any dust. Just use a clean cloth to wipe the surface. Sometimes i use cotton buds.

2. I brush on a thin layer of future floor polish to the shoulder pads. I brush the liquid straight on. The gloss finish of the polish is vital to ensure that the decals have a smooth surface to adhere to.

3. You want to make sure the future polish is completely dry and was brushed on as smooth as possible. This is where my small portable desk fan comes in handy. No more hairdryers for me :)
They're relatively cheap. I got this while i was based in Bangkok for around RM15.00 Really helps when i need to dry paint faster than normal.

4. Here's my secret to making the decals conform to the rounded surface nicely.
Firstly, cut the decal sheet as closely as possible to the design.
Then make small cuts in between the arrows. For the skull, just make a small cut on the top.
Sorry that my pics aren't too clear for this shot. But i think u'll understand what i mean.

5. I use Humbrol's Decalfix to apply the decals. Its a 2 in one solution so you don't need 2 separate types of solutions like what microsol used to market. Not sure if they still carry those products where u had to buy 2 different types of chemical solutions for applying decals. This one has worked well for me.

Just apply a thin layer to the surface before applying the decal.

Apply another layer once the decal have been positioned.

Wait for it to dry.

Apply a few more layers if u find the decals need to adhere better.

6. Most of the decals should fit nicely after a few, say 3-4 layers of the decalfix. Remember to let it dry a bit in between layers. Basically the solution helps to soften the decals to adhere better. But since gw decals are a a bit thick, that's where the cuts i made earlier helps to slip and slide them to stick better.

7. If you have air bubbles on the decals after they have dried, use a sharp hobby knife and make small holes in the air bubble area. Be very careful not to tear the decal. Again my picture isn't clear but i pricked 4-5 very small holes on the affected area.
Then simply apply more solution until the decal sticks nicely.

All 15 marines done. My target is to get them completed painted by end of next week so i'm kinda ahead of schedule. Can't wait to paint the next element in my sanguine list. If all goes according to plan then next Saturday i'll start priming.

This pic is mostly for the benefit of my good bro, Ivan, whose currently way down under. Bro, that's the glass cleaner i use to thin down my paints for airbrushing. Jeff got it for me way back ago (maybe even late 2009) and i'm happy using them.
Am sure you can get an equivalent there. Of course getting the proper thinning solution from vallejo as suggested by him is way better.
I'm just a cheapskate. Its also anti-static so u won't get electrocuted while airbrushing :)...cool huh. Safety first even when hobbying. Not sure if the vallejo thinner has that property....

All 15 are up. Next step is to get the decals on, wash, highlight. Then painting details. I'm hoping to get them finished by this weekend so that i can start on a new project next week.

I'm quite happy with how my bases have turned out. Most of my marines are based on only 1 foot so i'm expecting some to be broken off during gameplay. But i do like the look of them. Fits the jump infanrty theme well i think.

Still lots to do with the new change in my list. I'll update u on the changes as i update my blog. Wouldn't want to over-commit/slightly keeping it a secret hehehe.

Any more secret armies out there???

Assault marines progress

My new list now only has 20 assault marines. Since i've already painted 5 earlier i'm now painting up another 15 out of the actual balance of 20 in the previous post. All 15 have been painted on the main colors so tonite its about painting in the details like jump pack straps, joints, weapons etc. I primed them using astro grey and used vellejo's gory red for the uhhh red part. Both of these colors were airbrushed on so that saved a lot of time. The black was handpainted chaos black. I'll try posting progress of my army on a regular basis starting today so expect less babble and more pics from now. Am soooo psyched up for the ghemehaal campaign :)

There's nothing quite like a campaign to get the hobby blood pumping again :)!!!

I've only ever participated in one campaign way back in 2009 and it was a truly awesome experience. Hats off to my fellow Legio officer Azlan for organizing it.

2 years later and the fight for Ghemehaal is drawing to an end (should the disorder win...again).
And so, Legio Malaysia will be organizing the second campaign in the Arenxis storyline this October which should be a hoot!!! We'll be basing our campaign on FOW's Firestorm system and had the basics worked out during hobby night yesterday.

Enter the 8th Company Angels Sanguine to liberate Arenxis from the foul forces of choas led by the diabolical Lord Mithras.

I had earlier built this 1750 Descent of Angels list to be played in our annual year end tourney but this campaign is an even better excuse to get them done up.
Seeing as the Firestorm system puts the germans, in our case the imperials, at a disadvantage from the get go, i'll have to tweek the list a bit.

What started as a 44 jump pack models list will be evolving in the coming weeks so please stay tuned.

That said .......

20 assault marines on the wall, 20 assault marines on the wall.
1 got fully painted and shipped to war, 19 assault marines on the wall :)

Veteran squad Aquilon

Finally, veteran squad Aquilon is finished :)

This makes 19 marines painted and i have just 25 more to go for this 1750 list...more than 50% to go........ouch.

I have another 1 squad of veterans to paint and this time i'll be using the death company set. Much much easier to convert than metal.

Managed to get only 2 veterans done over the weekend. I'm really a slow painter...sigh. Gotta learn to speed up the process pronto else this force will never set foot on a tabletop anytime this century.

Also am suffering writers block = lazy. But does not the saying goes 'a picture tells a thousand words'. So 7 pictures i give you, worth at least 7000 words. Am sure you'd rather see pictures anyway.

Simple conversion to give them a thunderhammer and a lightning claw. Cutting metal is not fun.

Vallejo paints and airbrush highlighting

I'm officially in love with vallejo paints. Thinned it with glass cleaner and it sprayed on smoothly. Vallejo provided equivalents to GW paints and i'm very happy with the results. The drop bottle design is heaven for airbrush thinning as you can control the number of drops you use so once you get the formula right, subsequent colors are a no brainer.

For the base i used scarlett red, the equivalent of GW scab red.
This time though i decided to experiment highlighting using an airbrush so gory red was sprayed next from an above angle. This was followed by bloody red and finished with hot orange.
The secret i believe is not to make it to obvious but then again this is my first attempt at this. Hopefully the effect will be more apparent after i'm done with some washing which i'll do tomorrow.
It's not very obvious from the photo but there are slight color differences on the high edges.

Vanguard Veterans

Managed to get these done over the weekend. Not much but they have been kitted to my needs and primed. We'll let them dry for the nite and sprayed base red tomorrow. I'm gonna be using my new vallejo (wooohoooooo!!!!) game color set with these. Really looking forward to painting these models after going all white for the past few weeks.

Sanguinary priest brother Heracles

Brother Heracles, the 2nd sanguinary priest in my 1750 list is finally done. This will be the last model in this list that will be in all white armor. And i must say that i've quite enjoyed the experience. With my earlier interest in a white scars army, it's nice to be able to paint some white marines for my angels sanguine force.

I had loads of fun choosing from the death company set to make these 2 priests. The set gives a lot of nice shoulder pads option that you can really go crazy over. I enjoyed giving them some extra treatment as compared to my usual 'let's get this done quickly' attitude towards painting.

Sanguinary priest brother Alexander

Finished my first of 2 sanguinary priests. As mentioned earlier, i used the death company set to make them. Just love the extra part details from that set esp the shoulder pads.

So much so that i think i spent too much time on them with nothing much to show. Also my favorite gloss mixture still haven't arrived by sea freight so the gems are dull looking for the moment.

I had fun painting this model and am quite please with the end result :)

Next up is brother Heracles.

This always happen to me ........i get all psyched up about a project (the p-38 airplane) and then another thing comes up and it gets shelved indefinitely. Sigh....i am so weak...

But there is a good reason why the p-38 will stay a while longer in the hanger...

LEGIO 40K LEAGUE SEASON 4!!!!

Woooohoooooo!!!!! In case u guys forgot, i managed to get the Marksmen and Best painted army with my Saim-hann force for League 3 :). So the wildhost has 2 awards to defend and more to win esp the League Champion. We were denied by smelly orks last time.

So time to go full turbo to complete the much delayed angels sanguine army. This is what i got done over the past few days.

The apothecary finally completes my command squad. Wanted him to be different hence the all white armor. But i kept the backpack the same color and helmet gold so it gives him unity with the squad.

This is my Angels Sanguine force so far. 2 HQs, 1 command squad and 1 five man squad. Still have so much to do......
